FAQs
How does the umbrella process work?
Once you are registered, see above, we will contact your agency and arrange for them to send Oriel your gross payments. Each week you will need to send us your business expenses summary and receipts. We will calculate your net pay and offset your business expenses. You will receive your net pay each Friday morning direct into your chosen account. Oriel will pay over your taxes and National Insurance. It is that easy and hassle free for you.
Why should I chose Oriel?
Our services are low cost yet our service levels are excellent. We are reliable and are highly recommended by contractors due to our efficient and friendly service.
I’m in construction but want to be paid through an umbrella company is this possible?
Yes, umbrella companies are available to all types of workers including construction workers. However, you should bear in mind that under the CIS rules you cannot claim business expenses or tax allowances until the end of the year. When this is done you will normally receive a tax rebate meaning that over the whole year the CIS scheme gives you higher overall pay.
I’m self employed, do Oriel have a payroll solution for me?
Yes, the CIS scheme is designed for self employed construction workers and the Soletrader option is for other types of self employed workers. To use these services you need to have passed Oriel’s Self Employment Test (OSET) and be registered as self employed.
Are Oriel’s payroll services IR35 compliant?
The umbrella payroll service is 100% IR35 compliant. The CIS and Soletrader payrolls will not be an IR35 risk provided you are genuinely self employed.
Some umbrella companies enable contractors to reclaim expenses without receipts, does Oriel?
Oriel’s policy is to only claim receipted expenses or expenses covered by general HMRC allowances. In this way the service is fully compliant and there is no risk of the HMRC pursuing contractors for tax due as a result of non receipted expense claims.
